Eidgenoessische Materialpruefungs- und Forschungsanstalt (EMPA) NEST battery and thermal storage systems offers a versatile multi-energy platform for energy management and hybrid storage at district level. A dense network of sensors and actuators with over 8'000 data points enables performance monitoring.
State of the art: NEST comprises a wide variety of components: 169 kWh battery storage, 1 kWh super-capacitors, heat pumps, an ice storage (69 m3), an electrolyser (180 kWel; 2.7 kg/h H2), H2 storage (approx. 100 kg) and a methanisation plant (3.6 kg/h).
Services currently offered by the infrastructure: Partners receive access to the neighbourhood-scale multi-energy distribution and hybrid thermal and battery storage facilities at NEST, allowing them to obtain data from real-life use patterns and to implement and validate novel algorithms at reduced risk. These services are enabled by a readily expandable platform for data acquisition and remote access to the database. In addition, surveys can be conducted to gather user feedback and acceptance.
